The 2025 OSE Best Dissertation Award Winner – Dr. Troy Hutchins-Delgado
Troy Hutchins-Delgado recently graduated from the Optical Science and Engineering (OSE) Ph.D. program as a member of Distinguished Professor Marek Osinski’s group and as an employee of Sandia National Laboratories and the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) under the mentorship of Dr. Tzu-Ming Lu. Troy’s dissertation, “Ge/SiGe Quantum Wells: Material for the Post-Moore Era,” received distinction.
Troy’s main expertise include micro- and nano-fabrication, design and fabrication of gate-defined quantum dot devices, and optoelectronic and quantum materials characterization. Troy has authored 2 publications and has co-authored 6 publications and 18 conference proceedings during his time at UNM. Troy earned a B.S. in Physics and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University. Troy pursued both physics and engineering as a means of an ad hoc quantum engineering education. Troy worked as an undergraduate researcher studying ultrafast carrier dynamics in dye-sensitized solar cells. Troy spent his summer before graduate school working as a lab assistant studying functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) at the UNM Health Science Center. Troy earned his M.S. in Optical Science and Engineering at UNM working with his doctoral advisor Marek Osinski where he performed fabrication and cryogenic characterization of III-V laser devices.
Troy’s research interests includes device physics and engineering for quantum information processing, memory, and transduction. Troy is currently a postdoctoral appointee at Sandia National Laboratories exploring the materials origin of coherence-limiting charge noise in semiconductor spin qubits with a gate-defined quantum dot architecture. Outside of work, Troy prefers to spend his time exploring the beautiful and diverse landscape of New Mexico with his loving wife, son, and dog.
